In a bold move, a group of 40 founders under the age of 40 has penned a letter to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, urging him to reconsider certain aspects of the capital gains tax (CGT) overhaul.
The crux of their argument lies in the potential impact on business growth and investment beyond the realm of property. While they support efforts to improve housing affordability by removing negative gearing and the CGT discount on property, they draw a firm line when it comes to productive assets.
"The changes...will do nothing to make houses more affordable; all they will achieve is to suck the ambition, drive hope out of the hearts of young business builders," the group writes. This sentiment echoes a broader concern within the startup ecosystem, where industry figures fear that the reforms may discourage risk-taking and innovation, two critical pillars of entrepreneurial success.
Julian Fayad, founder of Loan Options AI, highlights the potential long-term consequences. He questions the incentive structure for investors and entrepreneurs, suggesting that the reforms may lead to a decline in business exits, a crucial phase in the startup lifecycle.
"There is that carrot...Every single business in this country at some point exits, whether they retire, sell the business, or become insolvent," Fayad emphasizes.
The government, however, has defended its position, with Treasurer Jim Chalmers arguing that the reforms aim to create a fairer tax system for future generations. He believes that by introducing a more neutral treatment of capital gains, certain investments will become more attractive relative to housing.
But the young entrepreneurs aren't buying it. They argue that the reforms risk harming investment across the board, impacting not just tech startups but every growing business in Australia.
"This aspiration ambush doesn't just impact tech startups either: it impacts every growing business in Australia. Meaning every small business that wants to become a medium-sized business and every medium-sized business that wants to become a big business," the group writes.
The debate has also sparked a social media campaign, with AI-generated images portraying Albanese as a business partner taking a large share of profits. This has further fueled the fire, with critics questioning the government's approach to taxation and its potential impact on the economy's productivity and growth.
The government has acknowledged some of these concerns, particularly regarding high-growth startups, and is considering targeted exemptions. However, the young entrepreneurs remain unconvinced, arguing that a uniform approach across all asset classes is not the solution.
"You've just increased taxes, that's all they've done," says Fayad. "Why are we suggesting that we increase taxes when we should be talking about cutting spending?"
The debate surrounding the CGT reforms highlights a broader tension between the government's efforts to create a fairer tax system and the potential impact on entrepreneurial ambition and investment. As the consultation process continues, it remains to be seen whether the government will heed the calls of these young business leaders and make any further adjustments to its budget reforms.
