Is there a secret plot to oust Afenyo-Markin? Farouk Mahama says absolutely not!
Whispers have been circulating, suggesting that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) might be orchestrating a move to replace Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Member of Parliament for Effutu, as the Majority Leader. However, Farouk Aliu Mahama, a former MP for Yendi, has stepped forward to emphatically deny these claims, calling them nothing more than baseless rumors.
Mahama argues that such a move would be entirely out of sync with the vision of the NPP's flagbearer, Mahamudu Bawumia. He further cautions that any attempt to pursue such an agenda could seriously damage the unity and cohesion within the party, something that seems particularly important right now.
Speaking on Channel One TV on February 3, 2026, Aliu Mahama made it clear that he has heard no such indications from Dr. Bawumia or any of the NPP's leadership. He stressed that these rumors should be treated with a healthy dose of skepticism, as they do not reflect the actual stance of the party's top brass or its presidential hopeful.
"I don’t think at this time Dr. Bawumia would allow that to happen because he is somebody who wants unity, and he has not said anything. So, nobody should put any words in the flagbearer’s mouth…it can be coming from the NDC just to knock our heads together," Mahama stated, suggesting a potential political maneuver.
But here's where it gets controversial... Farouk Aliu Mahama also posited that these rumors might be a calculated strategy by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to sow discord and confusion within the NPP's ranks. He believes the NDC might be trying to create internal friction to weaken the NPP's position.
He highlighted that Dr. Bawumia's primary focus remains on uniting all factions of the party. This commitment to reconciliation, Mahama pointed out, was clearly demonstrated in Bawumia's acceptance speech, where he urged his supporters to temper their post-primary celebrations, a move aimed at fostering a spirit of togetherness.
And this is the part most people miss... The emphasis on unity and the denial of internal power struggles paints a picture of a party striving for solidarity. However, could these denials themselves be a way to quell dissent before it truly takes root?
