Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo: A Pair of Mischievous Friends
In a delightful reunion, Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo, known for their iconic roles in Marvel's Thor and Hulk, have come together once more, but this time for a film that takes a completely different direction. Their latest collaboration, titled Crime 101, is an intense thriller that trades the fantastical adventures of superheroes for a gripping psychological duel.
During the premiere of the film, Hemsworth amusingly remarked to the BBC about the dynamic between him and Ruffalo, stating, "When we team up, it’s like we turn into a couple of mischievous schoolchildren who need to be kept in line to maintain focus on set." This playful rapport undoubtedly adds a unique energy to their performances.
In Crime 101, Hemsworth portrays a clever jewel thief who is meticulously planning one last significant heist, while Ruffalo takes on the role of a relentless detective determined to bring him to justice. Although both actors are celebrated for their hilarious chemistry, this film marks a significant shift towards a darker narrative.
Hemsworth acknowledged the challenge of stepping away from comedy, saying, "We share a strong background in humor, so transitioning to a serious film was quite an adjustment and came with its own set of discomforts at first."
Ruffalo praised Hemsworth’s performance, expressing excitement at seeing his friend tackle a role that diverges from what audiences typically expect. "I had the chance to witness him in a way I’ve longed to see, showcasing talents I knew he possessed but hadn’t yet had the right opportunity to explore," the 58-year-old actor shared. He continued, "When Chris stepped onto the set, he looked so transformed that I barely recognized him—it was exactly what I hoped to see."
The two have discussed embarking on a project together outside of the Marvel universe for many years, reflecting their close friendship. "We’ve been contemplating a collaboration for quite some time," Ruffalo revealed. "I deeply admire him, and each time we meet, we wonder, 'What can we create together?'
Interestingly, it was Hemsworth who initially reached out to Ruffalo regarding this film. "As soon as Chris contacted me, I read the script and thought, ‘Yes, I’m in!’" he recounted.
Joining this talented duo is the remarkable Halle Berry, who plays an insurance broker inadvertently drawn into the midst of the heist. At 59, Berry emphasized the importance of her character, demonstrating that women of a certain age can still be strong and assertive. She stated, "My character embodies the notion that women aren’t disposable, and she champions that by standing up for herself."
Berry aligns her outlook with her focus on empowering women facing perimenopause, which she was diagnosed with in her early fifties. She expressed frustration at being typecast due to age, asserting, "I consistently resist those limitations at every opportunity."
In a fascinating twist, Berry will portray President Joanna Duncan, a female version of the lead character from Bill Clinton’s political thriller novel, The President is Missing. Her enthusiasm for the role shines through as she declares, "It’s my dream to see a woman as the American president, and while I hope to witness that during my lifetime, I’m thrilled to embody that vision on screen."
Reflecting the essence of classic crime thrillers, Crime 101 is packed with adrenaline-fueled car chases and stunts, something Hemsworth found exhilarating. He described filming the intense stunts as a thrilling experience, likening it to reliving childhood adventures—"There’s nothing quite like the adrenaline rush; it makes you feel like a kid again, which is part of what I love about these films."
He humorously noted that growing up on a farm, where he often played around in old cars, gave him a unique preparation for executing those high-speed chases. Hemsworth stressed that relying on real stunts instead of CGI enhances the film’s authenticity, saying, "Experiencing those emotions firsthand adds an extra layer of grit and realism that elevates the film."
Beyond acting, Hemsworth has been embracing new challenges, whether it’s fitness experiments or acquiring new skills. His documentary series, Limitless, follows his journey to discover ways to live a longer, healthier life. As part of the show, he even learned to play the drums and had the incredible experience of performing live alongside Ed Sheeran.
Reflecting on his drumming journey, Hemsworth admitted, "I intended to continue learning, but the intensity of that period made me feel a bit anxious whenever I see a drum set now." As a devoted father of three, he recognizes the importance of maintaining his mental health through activities like drumming but joked about his single performance, saying, "After a few drinks, I agreed to join Ed on tour in Australia, but when I sobered up, I realized I wasn’t going to do that again. I’ve ticked that off my list!"
