Fawaz's fight began long before he stepped into the ring. Born in Nigeria to a Beninese mother and a Lebanese father, his childhood was marked by abuse and a sense of displacement. At just eight years old, he was sent to live with an uncle, and later, at 14, he was trafficked to London, believing he would reunite with his father. Instead, he found himself in modern-day slavery, locked away and forced to work.
"My early years were a struggle," he reflects. "It left me feeling like I didn't belong, like I had no place to call home."
Escaping this situation led Fawaz into the care system, but he believes it failed to protect him. Minor convictions, including cannabis possession and graffiti, complicated his immigration status, and he found himself in detention centers and facing deportation threats.
"I was just a number to them," Fawaz says of his experience with social services. "The scars run deep, and they haunt me."
It was at the All Stars boxing gym in Kilburn that Fawaz found sanctuary. He excelled as an amateur, becoming an English champion and captaining the national team. Yet, outside the ring, his life remained uncertain.
"How can I be an English champion without a British passport?" Fawaz asks. "I've dedicated my life to this country, and yet I'm still fighting for recognition."
Fawaz's story is a testament to the power of perseverance. Despite the challenges, he turned professional in 2022 and is now aiming for the top. His target? A home fight against Newcastle's IBF world champion, Josh Kelly.
"I hope my success speaks for itself," he says. "Maybe it will convince the Home Office to grant me the passport I deserve."
