Her history with the show dates back to 2009 (or maybe 2010—she can’t quite remember), when she started as a round-up reporter. “It was my first real job in journalism,” she reflects. A few years later, she co-hosted the show with Rawdon Christie, a career highlight she cherishes. “There’s always space on Breakfast to bring joy into people’s homes,” she says. “Helping viewers start their day on a positive note is a privilege.”
But this time around, things are different. The show’s set has transformed from a cozy “forest’s edge” theme to a sleek “urban dawn” design. The couches are gone, replaced by high desks and stools—a nod to the fast-paced year ahead, packed with an election, the FIFA World Cup, and global political drama. And while the set has changed, one constant remains: her co-host, Chris Chang. “Chris and I go way back,” Ali says. “I’m a big fan of his.”
The feeling is mutual. Chris is thrilled to have Ali by his side, even if it’s temporary. “Co-hosting Breakfast is all-consuming,” he explains. “You need someone who makes it feel effortless, and Ali does that.” Their connection dates back over a decade, and they’ve led parallel lives—both in their late 30s, married, and raising three young daughters. But there’s one key difference: Ali isn’t naturally a morning person, while Chris admits, “I’m not a night person, so by default, yes, I’m a morning person.”
For Ali, this new role means a significant shift from her past decade of part-time reporting and full-time parenting. Her afternoons, once filled with school pickups, extracurricular activities, and dinner prep, will now be dedicated to preparing for the show. “It’s a chance to focus on one thing at a time,” she says—a luxury for any parent. Her husband, Jo Barus, a musician who works with Sir Dave Dobbyn, will take the lead on weekdays, with Ali returning to Christchurch for weekends. “He’s a wonderful support,” she says. “And I think it’s good for our girls to see their mum pursuing her passion.”
But don’t think for a second that Ali is taking this lightly. “The show’s changed a lot,” she notes. “The format is more intense, with greater presenter involvement.” And this is the part most people miss: even for a seasoned professional like Ali, stepping back into this role is no small feat.
